We’ve all been there, we’ve all seen these DOORMEN,
going into a plush residential building,
trying to get into the fanciest club
or THE MOST EXCLUSIVE restaurant in your area

Like most email inboxes, they are crowded and hard to get into.

There is a Doorman with a list, checking to see if you belong there.
Now, that may sound a little harsh in the business world, especially when it relates to emailing.

It’s because we’ve been conditioned to send an email and expect it to arrive where we sent it.

That is no longer automatic with the new DMARC standards being enforced by email providers like Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Apple and many others.

Emails are now being scrutinized more than ever.

Let's talk about three vital email records
SPF
DKIM
DMARC

To get in, you gotta be on the list.
Everyone has seen the DOORMAN and his list. (Envision a Night Club, insert thumping bass sound here, thump-thump)

SPF (Your ID)
Some of the things he is checking for…
First, you must have a proper ID.
Think of SPF as your ID to get in… no proper ID (or a fake ID), no entry.

DKIM (Your Wardrobe)
You can't show up at the club wearing raggedy shoes and a T-shirt with holes in it
You must meet the dress code so the doorman can let you enter.
DKIM can be considered your dress code for email content, it's your clothes and shoes.
You don’t get in if you're all sloppy.

DMARC, (the DOORMAN)
So when you show up to get in with your email, and you don’t have a proper ID, and you are not properly dressed, the doorman, the DMARC policy, has three options.

NONE
QUARANTINE
REJECT

NONE
The Doorman can see you don’t have ID and are not dressed properly.
But what if you are someone famous like Tom Brady??
He recognizes the value of Tom and STILL lets him in.
He can determine if you are still worthy to gain entry and let you in.
It’s his club, his algorithm, his mail handling, his rules.
This is the DMARC none policy.

QUARANTINE
The Doorman can see you aren’t quite right and make you go wait at the back of the line.
For emails, that line is the SPAM Folder
EXACTLY WHERE WE DON’T WANT TO END UP, ESPECIALLY WITH INVOICING AT THE END OF THE MONTH!
There is no telling if or when you will ever get to the inbox and your intended destination.
**Note: would you really trust an Invoice that ends up in your SPAM Folder, hummmmm.
This is the DMARC quarantine policy.

REJECT
The Doorman can flat-out reject you and tell you to go home and don’t come back until you have the correct ID and meet the dress code
This is the DMARC reject policy.

Email providers and their fancy algorithms are deciding who’s worthy of getting in NOW more than ever.
They act like a Doorman at a club and decide who gets in and when.

If your emails can’t get past the guards at the gate, they can never be read. Your most valuable contracts are delayed, your invoice unpaid, because they are unseen.
