Why Phishing Attacks Spike In August

August 18, 2025

While you and your team may be returning from vacation, cybercriminals remain relentlessly active. Research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals that phishing attacks actually surge during the summer months. Discover how to stay vigilant and safeguard your business.

Why Does The Risk Increase?

Cyber attackers exploit the summer travel season by mimicking hotel and Airbnb websites, according to Check Point Research. They report a staggering 55% rise in new travel-related domain registrations in May 2025 compared to last year. Out of more than 39,000 domains, one in 21 was identified as malicious or suspicious.

Additionally, late summer marks the back-to-school period, triggering a rise in phishing emails impersonating university communications targeting students and staff. Even if your industry isn't directly affected, employees checking personal emails on work devices during this time can inadvertently open the door to cyber threats with just one wrong click.

How To Protect Yourself And Your Team

Although AI enhances cybersecurity defenses, it also enables attackers to craft more convincing phishing schemes. It's crucial to educate yourself and your employees on identifying suspicious activity to prevent falling victim to these scams.

Essential Safety Tips:

• Stay alert for suspicious emails. Don't rely solely on spotting typos or awkward phrasing—AI can produce polished messages. Scrutinize sender addresses and hover over links to verify their authenticity.

• Verify URLs carefully. Look out for misspellings or unusual domain extensions like .today or .info, which are common in fraudulent sites.

• Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails or messages, type the website address yourself to avoid phishing traps.

• Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security, protecting your credentials and sensitive data even if a breach occurs.

• Use caution with public WiFi. When connecting on public networks, use a VPN to secure your access to sensitive sites like booking platforms or financial accounts.

• Avoid checking personal email on work devices. Mixing personal and professional accounts on the same device increases vulnerability. Keep personal accounts on personal devices and work accounts on work devices.

• Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices for threats, block phishing attempts, and provide immediate alerts to your MSP, minimizing data exposure.

Phishing tactics evolve rapidly, fueled by AI advancements. The most effective defense is a well-informed team. Stay educated, stay alert, and protect your business from cyber threats.
